[THERAPY THOUGHTS] October: National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month – A Time to Prioritize Your Well-Being!
October 28, 2024
October is National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, a crucial time to raise awareness about mental health and the importance of early detection. Approximately 6 million Americans deal with mental health conditions every year. Depression affects millions of people every year, yet it often goes undiagnosed due to stigma, lack of awareness, or access to care. At Foundations Health & Wholeness, we believe in breaking down these barriers and encouraging everyone to prioritize their mental well-being.
Foundations school-based counseling and mental health screening program are committed to providing this screening for early intervention. “According to the Wisconsin Office of Children’s Mental Health, it is estimated that roughly 50% of all mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, rising to 75% by the age of 24,” says Foundations Therapist and Director of Community-Based Counseling Services Joanne Klysen, LPC, “That is why it is vital to find a way to administer a mental health screen to all school-aged children, as early identification leads to early intervention and treatment, which ultimately results in better outcomes for our children and communities.”
Mental health screenings are a powerful tool for identifying potential issues early on, but they are equally as important for people of all ages. Screenings provide a simple, confidential way to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions before they become overwhelming. When caught early, mental health challenges can be addressed through therapy and support, leading to better long-term outcomes and brighter futures. But if you’re experiencing concerning mental health symptoms (e.g. persistent sadness, anxiety, lethargy, feelings of hopelessness, etc.), it’s important to seek professional help to get the appropriate treatment for your needs. There’s no time like the present to get screened!
Here are some key benefits of mental health screenings:
- Early Detection: Identify mental health issues before they worsen, allowing for early or timely intervention in order to navigate care.
- Increased Awareness: Help understand your mental health status and recognize potential symptoms of mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more.
- Reduced Stigma: Taking action on your mental health may encourage others to do the same, helping to normalize the conversation and normalize mental health care in our society.
- Improved Well-Being: Addressing mental health concerns leads to better emotional, psychological, and physical health. Additionally, developing coping skills and resilience fosters a brighter, healthier future.
- Personalized Care: Screenings can help guide the right treatment options for your specific needs, whether through therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes.
